Defining MomentsBoca Ta-2 has had 13 years of excellence in supplying and meeting the needs of our loyal customers. Now internet ordering is available and info on education , class schedules and Boot Camp. We at Boca Ta-2 (Tattoo) pride ourselves on our prompt efficient service. With Kim and Kristy taking orders, Frank at the head of the supply department (Frank runs a tight ship but is teddy bear loveable), and Joyce answering technical questions, the operation runs smoothly. I have had a lot of “Defining Moments” in my life. After 35 years of owning salons and being a cosmetologist, I got a flyer in the mail that said, “Would you like to earn $500 an hour?”. I figured that II needed to get into a business that would be high end on the pay scale. So I figured this is for me! I went to a 2 day class and we worked on pig's ears with a coil machine and listened to the man who professed to have made $40,000 a month doing Permanent Makeup. I spent about the same amount that trainers are asking even today only to come home to find out I was not allowed to “tattoo” in the state of Florida. Well I wasn’t tattooing! I was doing micropigmentation. So when I found out about the law, me and another gal that had a PMU business 4 blocks from the DPR and knew some Senators & Congressman. In 1992 we got the law changed to read “under the general supervision of a Dentist, Osteopathic, Plastic Surgeon etc.". That made most of us legal. Yes, I got a bad start, but found my new career and passion. Donald Trump said, “... to be successful one has to truly love what they do for a living.” Even though I was frustrated and wanted to “quit” several times, I knew this was the career that I felt empowered and passionate about. So one foot in front of the other I slowly became the tech I knew I could be. 1990 was the first SPCP convention I went to and got some eye opening information and saw for the first time that you could actually draw in the skin without making just dot, dot, dot... otherwise known as pointillism. There were easier and more effective ways of doing brows, eyeliner and lips. The next “Defining Moment” of my career came when I answered an ad to teach Permanent makeup at a nail and esthetic school. The owner and I hit it off right away (…come to find out we shared the same birthday only she was 10 yrs older). I must say that while I knew about Permanent Makeup, she taught me to teach beginners in a very effective manner. We featured models and gave a starter kit with machine and pigments (I was very adamant about that since I spent so much on all my necessities to start up my business). We had my beginners course in Permanent Makeup registered with the Department of Education in Florida, post secondary education (it was the very first program registered in the state of Florida). Another “Defining Moment” ( “AHA” moment) came when I decided to buy supplies for the student kits and have the supplies on hand that my students needed. This led to selling supplies at the SPCP, AAM, Premier Hair Show& Orlando Esthetic Conventions. And that step, in turn, started my supply business! Soon I was shipping all over the United States! Frank started coming home early to help with the shipping and soon worked only 1/2 a day (he was foreman of a Yacht Building Company) and not too long after, he quit to work at our growing supply business. This is the same man who skeptical about my new career. My Fourth “Defining Moment” came when after living in Boca Raton (hence Boca Ta-2, (which means tattoo the mouth...) for 32 years, we decided to move to a small town near Gainesville and Ocala in North Florida called Williston. The real estate in this town was so reasonable that we bought the house we lived in and purchased a 2 story house for A’Nu-U (pronounced "A New You") Salon/Spa and put my classrooms upstairs. The house next to the salon became available and we made that into a Bed & Breakfast for my visiting students. I enjoy Training and am on the phone most days with techs across the nation answering questions, making their life easier by just giving information and encouragement. I made every mistake in the book along the way doing Permanent Makeup and so I think that I can keep the techs of today out of harm’s way and give them good advice. I never give advice that I don’t know… only about my genuine experiences and I generally have a little story to go with each question. Medical advice is out of my realm and I refer them to the client's physician or to Dr. Dixon on special medical conditions. They say that “Your life’s work is written on your heart when your born.” and in looking back over 60 some years of my life I can say that it is indeed true. It is great to have awareness and insight to finally discern your life in “Defining Moments”. These are the times of your life when a choice is made, a course of action is taken and a valuable lesson is learned. I am pleased that most choices I have made were really good, but then I have a “very active angel on my shoulder”. The name of my Angel is DeeDee and my life is dedicated to her memory. Some people think I am a little rough around the edges, but for those of who don’t know, I lost my daughter in a car accident. In 1980 Her car went into a canal and she drowned just before her 17th birthday. This “Defining Moment” was just devastating. I still imagine that she is away at college in order to get through some of the tough times I have, even to this day. In 1994, another "Defining Moment". I heard the 3 most frightening words in the English language, “You have cancer”. Well, talk about being scared!! Fortunately I had a lumpectomy and none of my lymph nodes were involved. I had 1 month of Radiation and 6 months of Chemotherapy and was pronounced healthy. These are reasons that I am thankful for what I have today. This article in not about me boasting about my success, but rather, letting all know what can come of a 2-Day class one fine day in a Miami hotel room. I talk to many successful, smart, wonderful women every day and know that I am in good company. There is no room in our precious time we have for jealousy, character assassination, or thinking that you know someone or their story. You don’t know what obstacles they had to overcome. Treat your fellow techs with the dignity they deserve and try to give someone a kind word, encouragement or heartfelt advice. We all came from the same place and are going the same path... Just move aside or try to help. Write to me about your "Defining Moments". Those Moments
